"New York City -
Scene in Castle Garden on the Arrival of Mormon Converts from Europe
-- From Sketches by our Special Artists -- See Page 207"
from Frank
Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper (Nov. 23, 1878, p. 196-197)
A sample of one of the prints in the
collection, mounted in matting. The print was
illustrated by "our Special Artists." Frank Leslie's
Illustrated Newspaper was published from 1855 to 1922. See also
the following information about Frank
Leslie.
Actual print does not look as light distorted with the
brighter area as shown in the image above. The original image is
consistent in coloring and matches more closely the darkness of the
outer areas of the above image. The distortion is the result of a
flash photo.
The illustration shows Mormon immigrants as they have
arrived in New York City and are situated in Castle Garden. Note
the onlookers in the building to the right. Illustrated are old
and young, healthy and ill. Note also the gas light fixtures
mounted on the support beams. The illustrators included remarkable
detail for a one-time printing in the newspaper.
Measurements:
Including matting: 21" H x 27" W
